I participated in a charity Crossfit competition with my gym yesterday. It was put on to raise money and awareness for children with autism--and was called "I Can Do Hard Things". Pretty much my entire gym signed up to participate and it was so much fun. It was hosted by Crossfit Preferred and was held near their facility in Gilbert. There were lots of other Crossfit gyms from the Valley there and it was fun to see all the different teams and stuff. My team name was "The Cleanup Crew"-me, Kristina, Sashia and Sam. Our team didn't place but somehow I came in first for women and Kristina came in second. My prize was a super cool sledge hammer. Rock on! ? It was a far cry from anything really competitive but it made me really want to start competing. The "Garage Games" are coming up in October and I'm thinking about training and trying to compete for real. We will see though.
Anyways--at the event we were divided up into different heats and were doing an 8 minute AMRAP (as many reps as possible) of:
11 burpees
11 air squats
11 HRPU (hand release push ups)
11 kettle ball swings 35#
11 wall balls with 14# ball
11 pulls ups
6 foot wall traverse
sled push (not sure the distance?)
then run to start line and go again
Every competitor had a coach to count reps and call out "no-rep" if something was performed incorrectly. We didn't know what the WOD was until we got there, but once I saw it I really wasn't worried. I am decent at all of these things and thought it wouldn't be too hard. But man! I was wrong. I think the competitive edge and everyone watching and screaming just made it all crazy. I went all out for the 8 minutes and by the end I was pretty jello-y everywhere. I ended up with 177 reps, which is 2 1/2 rounds of the whole thing. The highest score for the men was 210, and the dude who won is from my gym also and is actually my strength coach. I've been taking a class from him for the past two months and love it. This week is my last week--I'm glad because it's two nights a week and it's hard to find sitters and I'm always full of energy afterwards so don't sleep great--but also bummed because my weights were really starting to get heavier and I feel a little stronger. I'm going to try to just keep up his progressions sequence on my own. At any rate--it was so fun and I'm glad I did it!
